Trinity Sunday

We have been waiting together on God during the last two weeks. Sharing the experiences of the disciples as they waited for the Holy Spirit and trying to spend our waiting moments in prayer for ourselves and others, in reading the Word of God and in worship. Now we come to the ‘what next?’ Holy Spirit came upon the disciples gathered in the upper room in tongues of flame and a rushing wind. They spoke in languages they did not know and proclaimed Jesus as Lord. The gathered crowd who heard and saw the spectacle then were addressed by Peter who held nothing back in his speech to them, urging them to accept Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God and to believe that he is Lord. 3000 people in that crowd believed that day. They were ready, as Jewish people they had watched and waited for Messiah. Understanding that Jesus was Messiah and had been crucified by them and for them the people said, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’. Peter follows through on the instructions of Jesus given before his ascension: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” Matthew 28:19-20. Peter outlines the steps for these people which are still the steps today. Firstly, repent, that is turn away from the sins you are committing and have committed asking for forgiveness from the Lord and being determined not to continue on that path again. Secondly, each one having individually repented, be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven, and then the Holy Spirit will be given to you as a gift. Our ‘what next’ is built on this foundation of faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism and the knowledge that we have been given the gift of Holy Spirit. The steps forward are to keep learning and growing as God’s people together, in our fellowship and individually, and to do as Peter did – pass the message on. We also are to go as Jesus has commanded us and take the gospel wherever we go in the power of the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Begin with prayer and ask the Father for the opening to speak the truth of Jesus in your life. Holy Spirit will do the rest.
