Who do you say Jesus is? And what are you going to do about it? Several times whilst growing up I had my Dad say to me: “Who do you think I am? (and he sometimes added “Do you think I’m made of money?”!) In the context, he was really acknowledging that as my earthly father he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) deliver on all my needs and expectations. In Sunday’s reading from Mark 8, Jesus asks almost the same question directly of his disciples. “Who do you say that I am? (8:29) Given the context of Jesus’ ministry and the setting – near Caesarea Philippi, where numerous pagan gods were worshipped – it was a pivotal question (implying “Who do you worship and follow?) In a way, it’s the question that my Dad, as a believer, knew I would need to address: “Who would I trust to meet my deepest needs and expectations?” Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question is important: “You are the Messiah” (Matthew’s account adds “the Son of the living God”) ie. Jesus is the Messiah, the ‘anointed one’, the promised rescuer of God’s people. Despite giving a scripturally correct answer, the verses that follow (8:31-33), show clearly that Peter’s idea of the Messiah was likely of a ‘triumphant warrior King’, rather than the ‘Suffering Servant King’ that Jesus’ life demonstrated. Hence the rebuke of Peter in 8:33. In verses 8:34-38, Jesus speaks plainly about the cost of true discipleship – there will be suffering and loss; everything must be surrendered to Jesus. There is, however, the promise of amazing gain – abundant life now with Jesus, being part of God’s saving work, and the gift of eternal life. This passage contains extremely hard, even paradoxical teaching, but it also has vital truth to be embraced if we are to be authentic followers of Jesus Christ. And we are not without help and hope; the Holy Spirit is with us always. So, what is your answer to Jesus’ question: “Who do you say that I am?” And also, are you willing to work at submitting control of your life to Jesus, so that he can use you to spread the Good News through what you do and say, despite the cost?

Shalom, Kevin.
