Have you ever asked a group of Year 6 children what they wanted to be when they grew up? The answers are fascinating. I used to do this with my CRE children. The most common answer was that they wanted to be rich and famous in some way. As time has gone on, the answers have changed from ‘movie star’ to ‘TikTok influencer’, but the gist is the same. Most people at some stage in their life have dreamed of having their name in lights, as we used to say. Making lots of money and being the centre of people’s attention are the things which they strive for, and for many that’s true. But not all those who embark on these careers end up with the spotlight on them and a mansion in Beverley Hills. The lure of fame can just as easily lure them into places they would never have gone and leave them penniless and sometimes in danger. In our reading from Acts this Sunday we read the story of Simon the Magician who was happily making a name for himself using magic to pretend to be someone with the power of the ‘God who is called Great’. When Philip came to his part of Samaria preaching Jesus and performing miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit, the people turned to Jesus instead of Simon, and Simon decided to ‘get with the strength’ and joined them. An issue arose, however, when Peter and John arrived and prayed over the new Christians for them to receive the Holy Spirit, laying their hands on each. Simon’s interest in being someone who could draw the crowds was rekindled and he wanted to be able to wield this power. He wasn’t short of a quid so he offered Peter and John money to buy this power from them. Obviously he had no real understanding of what or who he was dealing with, and little actual faith. Peter gave an instant and very stinging reply calling him to repentance and declaring that Simon’s heart was not right and he was bound in the chains of wickedness. Suddenly there was no gain in his money or his status. He could only plead for them to pray for him. What do you want in life? What are your priorities? Where is your heart set? Jesus said, ‘Without me you can do nothing’. Do you need to do a heart check and realign?
